Dear colleagues

It is with great pleasure that I present this special issue of the British Journal of Radiology. The papers presented in this issue are selected from papers read at the European Radiation Research 2005 conference (ERR 2005) in Leicester, held 5–8th September 2005. This was a joint conference of the Association for Radiation Research (ARR) and the European Society for Radiation Biology (ESRB). Traditionally, ESRB hosted its annual meetings in different European countries, jointly, with a local association. I was privileged to be a member of the Organising Committee for a previous meeting of these societies, held in 1997 at Oxford. It was at this meeting that decisions were made to name the ESRB's joint meetings as European Radiation Research conferences. Eventually, in 2006 the society renamed itself as the European Radiation Research Society (ERRS) to reflect its main aim of bringing together scientists working on all aspects of radiation science in one international society.

A large number of papers were presented in the ERR 2005 and many internationally recognised scientists presented their own work and organised plenary sessions for this conference. This meeting was hugely successful and very rewarding and as such it is hoped that more joint meetings occur between the two societies in the future.

Radiation Biology is a relatively new discipline that has contributed significantly to our understanding of the science of radiation. However, our challenges for the future are to translate the knowledge compiled during many years of research on the radiation response of cells and animals to man. This will only be achieved by integrating the skills of biologists, chemists, physicists, physicians and many others working in this field. Interaction between these diverse expertise has been the goal of ARR meetings and will certainly form the new ERRS.

The papers in this volume reflect the diversity of current research in the field of radiation and were initially chosen on their scientific merit. The papers were subsequently peer reviewed as per the BJR policy. This volume includes articles on the mechanisms of action and methods of modification of radiation damage. It is hoped that highlighting these aspects of radiation damage will help in further understanding the complex phenomenon of radiation damage.

Sadly, Dr Mark Plumb, who was the Secretary of the ERR 2005 and very enthusiastic about the publication of this special issue, died in May 2007. To all of us, Mark will be remembered as an outstanding scientist of high integrity. Mark will always be remembered and continue on in our thoughts and memories, particularly of those who attended ERR 2005.

Finally, I take the opportunity to thank my co-organisers of the ERR 2005, particularly, the 2004–2006 Chair of the ARR Professor Stephanie McKeown, University of Ulster for agreeing to compile this volume. I would also like to thank the contributing authors for accepting my invitation to have their papers published in this volume and to the reviewers for investing their time and knowledge in reviewing the articles presented. I am also very grateful to the British Journal of Radiology for printing this volume and for giving me the opportunity to be the editor of this special issue.

Mohi Rezvani

Chair – ARR, Vice President - ERRS
