Editorial |
In this Editorial we would like to bring to the notice of readers and contributors changes that are being made to the presentation of the Journal and organizational procedures in response to changing circumstances.
Case Reports, Cases of the Month and Pictorial Reviews
Since the journal started to accept on-line submissions using the "Editorial Manager online submissions and tracking system" (http://bjr.edmgr.com) towards the end of 2004, there has been a sharp increase in the number of papers submitted to the Journal.
In many respects this is, of course, good news. However, there is a down side. In spite of maintaining the highest refereeing standards, we are now accepting more material each month than the page allocation can accommodate. Financial constraints prevent an increase in the size of each issue at the present time and a delay has built up between the acceptance of a paper and its appearance in print. Reference was made to this in the Review of the Year for 2005 [1].
We are committed to ensuring that the time interval between full papers being accepted by the reviewers and Honorary Editors and appearing in print should be as short as possible and to achieve this we intend to make maximum use of the "Publish Ahead of Print" facility that has recently been introduced [2].
The necessary balance between material accepted and Journal space can best be achieved if, in the future, Case Reports are normally accepted for electronic publication only. All authors who have submitted Case Reports recently have been informed of this decision. As explained in the Guest Editorial on "BJR Advance", Case Reports accepted for electronic publication only will remain fully citable. Also this decision will not preclude the occasional appearance of a Case Report in the printed Journal if, in the opinion of the Honorary Editors, it is making a particularly important point.
We have also considered the position of the "Case of the Month" and "Pictorial Reviews". It is felt that these features are normally of high educational value and pro tem they will continue to be published in print as well as electronically.
