Figure 9. Axial T₂ weighted MR image of the anal sphincter complex. The external sphincter (black arrow) is demonstrated as an almost complete ring of low-signal intensity. The intersphincteric plane is of relatively high signal (arrowhead). The internal sphincter (white arrow) lies more medially and is also demonstrated as a low-signal intensity structure but is continuous with the muscularis propria of the rectum.
