Book review

David Isenberg and Peter Renton should be congratulated in having put together a comprehensive multiauthor textbook of imaging in rheumatology. A great strength of the book is that most chapters have input from both clinical and radiological experts.

The book is divided into three sections. The first based on technique, the second on anatomy and the third on specific conditions. The result of this is format is a comprehensive coverage of the topic but also considerable repetition. The clinical aspects of the first section could be safely omitted as these are dealt with elsewhere.

In the second section there are chapters on localized pain in both the upper and lower limbs. Soft tissue masses and nerve entrapments syndromes are also included. There are also chapters on spine pain, multiple peripheral joint swelling and muscle disease.

The last section, which makes up over half the volume, is in the more traditional format of rheumatology textbooks with chapters on the imaging of specific rheumatological conditions, including some of the non-musculoskeletal aspects. This section includes a chapter on metabolic bone disease, skeletal hereditary disorders and childhood arthropathies, as well as a miscellaneous chapter covering those conditions not included elsewhere.

The book is well written and the illustrations are, on the whole, of a good quality. As with many multiauthor books there is some inconsistency over the degree of detail for a given subject. The same number of pages have been dedicated to a chapter on seronegative spondyloarthropathies as to one on antipholospholipid antibody syndrome.

This book would be useful to the rheumatologist who wants an up to date comprehensive guide to the imaging techniques available for any particular problem. Although it maybe too specialized and clinically orientated to be recommended to trainees, I would recommend this book as a useful companion for consultant radiologists who have an interest in rheumatological imaging.
