Book review

Pocket radiologist. Interventional. Top 100 procedures. By P Rogers, A Roberts, P Schloesser and W Wong, pp. xii 325, 2003 (Elsevier Science, Salt Lake City, UT), £37.00 ISBN 0-7216-0034-4

P Sidhu

This neat, well illustrated and compact book is conveniently divided into eight broad sections dealing with interventional aspects with respect to venous, arterial, dialysis, neuroimaging, spine and pain management, genitourinary, chest and abdominal procedures. The basics are dealt with first, for instance how to administer local anaesthetic kicks off the first section of the book. often little attention is given to the administration of local anaesthetic, which causes unnecessary pain to the patient and makes any interventional procedure fraught for the patient as well as the operator. Each subsection that deals with a procedure lists key factors, pre-procedure details, procedure description, post-procedure details, common problems and a list of selective references.

Although the general interventional radiologist is unlikely to manage complex neurointerventional procedures or be involved with pain management, these subjects are dealt with comprehensively and would be of particular interest to the trainee. As with any textbook form a North American author group, CT plays a prominent role, particularly in interventional procedures in the abdomen. In Europe ultrasound would be the first line imaging modality to guide drainage of an abdominal collection, but far more emphasis is placed on CT in the present textbook. Not withstanding, this book is to be highly recommended to all those practising interventional techniques, from the junior trainee to the more experienced interventionists. Those procedures less often practised, for instance embolisation of epistaxis, can be "brushed-up" on with a quick read of the succinct and comprehensive text. This book is moderately priced and deserves to be in the pocket of all interventionists. A small note, the "Perclose" section, is already out of date as a result of improvements made by the manufacturers!
