Book review

CT angiography of the chest. By M Remy-Jardin, J Remy, J R Mayo, N L Muller, pp. 148, 2001 (Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins, Philadelphia, PA), $139.00 ISBN 0781727316

Modern CT technology has brought detailed examination of the thoracic vessels to maturity and many departments will find valuable this crudite monograph, which comes jointly from distinguished authors in Lille and Vancouver. Above all, this book is superbly produced and supremely practical, managing to convey an extraordinary amount of information in only 150 pages. Initial chapters review the technology of spiral CT, including enhancement protocols and display methods from reformatting to volume rendering, and normal findings and variations. Many practitioners will find the major chapters on the thoracic aorta and on pulmonary embolism to be the most appropriate to clinical use, the latter includes a balanced review of the sensitivity of the technique and its clinical role. Chapters on pulmonary hypertension, acquired vascular disease of lung and vascular anomalies may perhaps bemore valuable for reference but a final group of short chapters on haemoptysis, thoracic outlet disorders and SVC syndrome shed valuable light on developing applications. An excellent appendix summarizing examination protocols has, I suspect, already been widely photocopied for practical use.

The text is superbly terse and to the point and the book is superbly illustrated with figures to support almost every important point. All in all, an excellent piece of work and a valuable addition to the literature on CT.
