Book review |
This is a comprehensive text book that follows the popular format of differential diagnostic features for MRI. It is divided logically into sections covering all anatomical regions from brain, head and neck, musculoskeletal chest to the abdomen and pelvis. There is a consistency in format of the chapters that provide ample detail relating to normal appearance and techniques before outlining abnormalities. The text is clear and concise although in some situations too brief, requiring additional reference material. The images throughout are of the highest quality and appropriately annotated to allow the reader easy correlation with the text.
The text is laid out in a pleasing formation of disease process, MRI findings and comment allowing the reader quick access to the appropriate section of the book. This will prove an invaluable book in the busy clinical MRI session. The section on brain imaging is comprehensive covering congenital abnormalities to infection and tumours. Section 18 on cerebral vasculature and MRA is comprehensive and well illustrated. Excellent chapters are provided on paranasal sinuses and the nasal cavity followed by sections dedicated to the upper, lower neck, larynx and hypopharynx.
The format of the musculoskeletal section is different from the previous section, but benefits from clear anatomic line diagrams in addition to high quality MR images demonstrating normal anatomy in addition to pathology.
Sections on the mediastinum heart and lungs follow the same format with comprehensive sections on MRA.
The chapters on abdomen and pelvis, spleen, pancreas, gastrointestinal tract and kidneys form the final part of this book.
The strengths of this text lie in the large number of quality images that are appropriately annotated to provide a useful library for the trainee. The format of the text with the basis on differential diagnosis will be popular. This book cannot replace more standard text but will be a welcome and useful addition as a bench book in all departments. The lack of references, however, detracts from the overall quality.
This is a book to be recommended and I am sure will be popular particularly with the trainee.
