Handbook of Contrast Echocardiography. By H Becker and P N Burns, pp. xv+184, 2000 (Springer-Verlag, Heidelberg, Germany), £34.00 ISBN 3540670831

This is a very focused, small book, which can easily fit into a briefcase or laptop case. I mention this because it is a book best used at the bedside or in the out-patient setting. It is clearly written and clearly illustrated with good summaries of important points throughout, which are presented in an eye-catching readable form. A reasonable familiarity with the field of echocardiography is necessary to make best use of this book. The book assumes knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the heart and concentrates on assessment of left ventricular function and left ventricular perfusion by contrast enhancement. It is much more of a "how to" guide rather than a critical analysis of technique and as such, would not be a good academic source
A competent echocardiographer that knew little or nothing about contrast echocardiography could use this book to quickly become familiar with the subject and to start using the technique. This book is visually attractive and clear, with a very high standard of presentation and a large number of very well presented images. The sections explaning vasodilator stress and drawing comparison with nuclear medicine techniques were particular highlights, reflecting personal interests and demonstrating clarity of presentation.
