J McHugo

This text is the result of a collaborative approach by experts in this field and, although multi-authored by an international team, the style of the text is clear and concise. The book is divided into eight parts, ranging from aetiology, natural history and tumour biology through to diagnostics, surgery and palliative care. Each section is subdivided further into chapters. Useful chapters on novel therapies and organisation of care are included.

The preliminary sections on aetiology include excellent, well referenced text on the epidemiology, associations and molecular basis of sporadic ovarian cancers. There follows similar chapters dealing with familial cancers and associated gene mutations. This is followed by a section dealing with the natural history and pathology of both epithelial, borderline and non-epithelial ovarian cancers.

An extensive section on tumour biology is well presented. A further section outlining current thinking on presentation and screening are dealt with. Chapter 9 includes a section on the socio-economics of ovarian screening.

Section 5 of this book deals with currently available diagnostic and prognostic techniques. The final section outlines surgical options, both for primary disease and recurrence. Chapters on current chemotherapeutic options with outcome data follows. Finally, Section 8 outlines possible novel therapies and the current supporting scientific evidence for these.

This book combines chapters that are very clinically focused as well as chapters that are more research based. The text is clearly written and well referenced. The editors are to be commended on the final result that provides a cohesive text by multiple authors.

This book should be recommended, particularly to those clinicians working in the field of ovarian cancer. It provides an overview of current thinking on all related topics to ovarian cancer. It should also provide a useful reference to the trainee in this important field.
