In August of this year I carried out an audit in the hospital in which I am currently employed with the aim of establishing the distribution of clinical guidelines for hospital staff requesting imaging investigations. The Royal College of Radiologists issues the guidelines in the form of a booklet entitled "Making the best use of a department of clinical radiology" [1]. The college recommends that every member of staff requesting imaging investigations should own a copy of this book.
A random 10% sample of staff were interviewed. Only 24% of these staff had a copy of the book. 40% were aware that the book existed and 60% were aware that guidelines existed. Of the 24% that had their own copy, none of the copies had been obtained from the hospital.
The hospital Trust did not supply the finance for purchase of the book. The book costs between £2.50 and £4.00 depending on the quantity ordered. These guidelines, which are immediately available, produce a more efficient service for the patient and reduce the stress for the requesting doctor and the radiologist concerned.
The Department of Radiology is now funding the cost of the books themselves, and the audit will be carried out again in 12 months. In the mean time I am extending the audit to hospitals in South Wales and will inform you of the results.
Yours etc.,
