Ultrasound of the extracranial vertebral artery (VA) is a valuable technique. This review outlines VA anatomy and the technical aspects of ultrasound scanning of the VA, then proceeds to demonstrate and discuss the use of ultrasound of the VA in identifying vertebralsubclavian and coronarysubclavian steal syndromes, aortic valve disease, stenosis or occlusion of the VA itself, dissection and aneurysm of the VA, and vertebrobasilar insufficiency.
