The Radiation Treatment of Actinomycosis

R. Stewart-Harrison, B.M. (Oxon)

Röntgen Institute of the University of Zürich (Director, Prof. Dr. H. R. Schinz)

This excerpt was created in the absence of an abstract.

1. The methods of deep X-ray dosage has been discussed shortly.

2. Thirty cases of microscopically verified actinomycosis have been treated radiologically. In twenty-two cases the disease was localised to the head and neck. The treatment was invariably successful. In eight cases of actinomycosis of other organs the results of treatment by the disjuncted fractional method were unsatisfactory.

3. The results of treatment by the disjuncted fractional method and protracted-fractional method have been contrasted and the protracted-fractional method has been found advantageous. We have not had enough experience to offer an opinion as to the results of protracted-fractional treatment of other organs. We hope and expect that it will show an improvement on the former methods.

4. Surgical methods may be limited to aspiration and small incisions of abscesses, together with measures that may be necessary to establish the diagnosis (e.g., in intestinal actinomycosis).

Received for publication November 30, 1933.
