In Africa and in the West, there is now a major epidemic of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The incidence of the infection continues to rise. In America and Europe the main group affected remains homosexual men (the first wave of the epidemic), but spread by sharing needles among intravenous drug users is increasing (the second wave). An increasing number of women are infected, and the number of babies born to infected mothers is increasing too. In the West more people are being infected by heterosexual intercourse (the third wave), although this is the main means of transmission in Africa. Great hopes are pinned on antiviral therapy.
