The use of computed tomography (CT) for examining acute head trauma is now universally accepted. With the replacement of dedicated head scanners by general purpose CT systems, CT is becoming used increasingly to examine spinal and pelvic trauma. This developing practice, together with the use of carbon fibre and cantilever geometry for table design, may lead to the unwitting overloading of CT table tops. The International Safety Standard, IEC Clause 601–1, requires that the table top supports 135 kg (21 st 3 lb). Many manufacturers use this figure as the weight limit for the stated performanceof their systems.
