Benign intracranial hypertension (BIH) is a condition characterized by raised intracranial pressure without clinical, laboratory or radiological evidence of focal lesions or hydrocephalus. The pathogenesis of the syndrome is unknown but various female endocrine abnormalities, such as preceding amenorrhoea, onset of menarche, and elevated oestrone levels in the obese, have been associated with it (Weisberg, 1975; Ahlskog & O'Neill, 1982).
Received for publication November 1, 1987.
