This account of upper abdominal ultrasound from the University of Bologna has been written by three gastroenterologists with a wide experience of the subject. Opening chapters are devoted to physics and technique. There follows a review of the ultrasonic findings in liver, biliary, pancreatic, vascular, splenic, nodal, gastrointestinal and peritoneal disease. Three final chapters discuss tissue characterisation, needle aspiration under ultrasound control and the preliminary results of ultrasonic endoscopy.
