Biological Effects of Ultrasound: Mechanisms and Clinical Implications. NCRP Report 74, pp. xiii + 266, 1983 (NCRP, Bethesda, MD), $15.00. ISBN 0–913392–64–2
This excerpt was created in the absence of an abstract.
This is the first full NCRP (National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements, USA) report on the biological effects of ultrasound and it includes a useful overview of the physical principles involved. The current state of knowledge of biological mechanisms is reviewed; it is concluded that ultrasonic bioeffects may be due to heat (there is a brief mention of hyperthermia) and mechanical stress (particularly when enhanced by cavitation). Medical applications of ultrasound in surgery, therapy and diagnosis are considered.
