The principal objective of breast screening is of course to enable cure of otherwise incurable breast cancer. A secondary objective which will probably assume increasing importance in the future is to enable cure by less radical treatment than if the cancer were allowed to remain until it presented symptomatically. A third objective, undervalued by the health professions but providing the main reason for many women attending screening clinics, is reassurance that they do not have cancer.
