Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Inter-Departmental Mechanical Work-Shop, The Royal Free Hospital, Pond Street, London NW3 2QG

Ultrasound examinations of the thyroid and parathyroid glands are becoming more frequent. Although contact scanning is still preferred by some, most ultrasonographers employ a water bath. The conventional water bath consists of a metal frame with a plastic or polythene sheet. This costs £368 and is somewhat cumbersome to use. The unit described below is very light, inexpensive and easy to use. Furthermore, the design could be modified to make a purpose-built water bath for use elsewhere.
