Measurement of the rate of gastric emptying of solid food by external counting techniques necessitates the use of a radioactive label which is uniformly distributed through the solid, remains attached to the solid in the stomach and is not absorbed.
The main objection to simple methods of labelling solids by techniques which rely on the surface absorption of isotopes (e.g. Griffith et al., 1966) has been raised by Meyer et al. (1976) who showed that the label may readily dissociate from the solid.
