The double contrast barium meal—a simplification

This excerpt was created in the absence of an abstract.

The double contrast barium meal is not a new idea, but current interest has been provoked by the accuracy of fibreoptic endoscopy and by workers in Japan.

An important factor is the introduction of air or gas to the stomach and duodenum. This has been accomplished variously by intubation, drinking tonic water and by swallowing effervescent tablets, granules or powder. All these can have disadvantages especially with the elderly, the very young, and with immobile or recumbent patients. With the exception of intubation the results of gas production from these methods have tended to be inconsistent. Intubation is uncomfortable and not practical on out-patients or in a busy department.
