The letter by Orchard and Martin-Smith (1971) directs attention to a phenomenon which is familiar to those using electron beams for experimental or industrial purposes and which must be fully understood when electron beams are used clinically. Published electron depth dose curves clearly demonstrate the effect (e.g. Holm, 1969). It has also been found by Spencer (1959), who calculated the energy dissipation within an infinite medium irradiated by an infinitely broad, parallel and unidirectional beam of electrons. He used the general transport equation and assumed continuous slowing down of the electrons.
