The acute haemodynamic effects after left heart injections of Thorotrast in a small series of dogs were examined. Thorotrast was found to be a contrast medium with adequate density and sufficiently low viscosity to allow rapid injection. It caused no significant acute changes in cardiac output, pulse rate, pressure or left ventricular volumes. It has no effect on urinary output or on clotting times. We therefore conclude that it is a more suitable agent than the commonly used water-soluble contrast media for acute animal experimentation when stability of the cardiovascular system is required.
