Traumatic para-mediastinal air cysts

Ivan Hyde, M.R.C.P., F.F.R. *

Wessex Cardiac and Thoracic Centre, Southampton Chest Hospital, Southampton

Two cases are presented where, following trauma to the chest, a cystic air space appeared in the left para-vertebral region. From the radiological appearances these were not intra-pulmonary in site and it is concluded that they arose from rupture of alveoli into the pulmonary ligament.

* Present address: Department of Radiology, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, 27514, U.S.A. Please address requests for reprints to Dr. Hyde in England at the address given in the title.

Received for publication August 1, 1970.
