This volume is the outcome of a series of lectures delivered at the Léon Berard Centre at Lyons in 1963. The lectures, numbering some 14 altogether, were given mainly by the staff of this centre, associated with which is a chair of clinical "cancérology" of the Faculty of Medicine of Lyons. The incumbent of this chair and the director of the Léon Berard Institute is the well-known surgeon Dr. Marcel Dargent, who has been responsible for editing this volume and has himself contributed approximately half the published papers.
