The accurate localisation of a point source of radioactivity in an absorbing medium is frequently desirable and the theory has been developed by Mayneord (1950). The applicability of his formula to the localisation of small ("point") sources of thorium in water has been tested by measuring the
radiation from opposite sides of the container. The positions calculated by means of his formula were in disagreement with the known positions of the source and a modified formula has been developed. Experimental evidence has been obtained to show that the approximation involved in the theory is sufficiently good to justify its use.
