The Diagnostic X-ray Department, General Infirmary, Leeds
This excerpt was created in the absence of an abstract.
1. Thirty-two patients were examined with a new preparation for intravenous pyelography (sodium acetrizoate) and with diodone, under standard conditions.
2. Three observers compared the pyelograms of each individual and preferred those produced by diodone in two-thirds of the cases.
3. Sodium acetrizoate produced denser but less well-filled pyelograms.
4. Sodium acetrizoate caused a smaller diuresis than diodone in the doses used, and this may be the reason for the poorer filling of the pyelograms. If this is correct, then higher doses of the new medium might result in better filling by increasing the diuretic effect.
It is a pleasure to thank Professor Johnstone for entrusting me with the investigation of this preparation, for constant interest and encouragement, and for acting as an observer; Dr. Illingworth and Mr. Raper for acting as observers and for their helpful comments on the radiographs. Professor Hemming for allowing me facilities in his department to carry out creatinine estimations.
Generous supplies of 30 per cent sodium acetrizoate were provided by Messrs. May and Baker.
Accepted for publication November 1, 1953.
