Tumours resistant to radiation might respond if a higher dose could be given than the maximum normally tolerated by the healthy tissues surrounding the tumour. Among the effects of radiation is thrombus formation in the small vessels and, although the part played by this in tumour regression is still disputed, it can be accepted as one of the factors limiting tissue tolerance.
