The "Chaoul" near distance low voltage tube has been used by Chaoul and many others in cavities such as the mouth, bladder and rectum in the treatment of small carcinomata.
There are considerable difficulties, however, in the accurate positioning of the tube, and in retaining it in the correct position during treatment. These include:—
(1) Mobility of the parts,
(2) Movement of the patient,
(3) Irregularity of the treatment surface,
(4) The "Chaoul" applicator being opaque, it can be only approximately placed so that the lesion is in the centre of the field.
