The Gamma-ray Measurement of Radon

T. H. Oddie, M.Sc., A.Inst.P., Physicist

Commonwealth X-ray and Radium Laboratory, University of Melbourne

This excerpt was created in the absence of an abstract.

Experimental measurements have been made of the rise of {gamma}-ray activity of freshly filled radon sources. The effect on the measured activity of the following factors has been taken into account:—

(a) the distance between the source and the measuring instrument,

(b) the lead wall thickness of a cylindrical ionisation chamber of I-litre volume and brass lining,

(c) the wall material and thickness of the radon container, and

(d) the thickness of the wooden source holder.

Tables are given, suitable for interpolation, together with a method of calculating the radium (B + C) content of a container at any time after filling.

Results obtained with two different measuring instruments agree with each other and with those previously published by Slater, if the latter are corrected for absorption.

The measured half-value period of radon of 3·831 ± 0·006 days is also in agreement with other work.
